The 2017s From Sonoma The 2017 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast comes from multiple sites on the coast and was fermented with close to 50% whole clusters. Aged in just 17% new oak, it has a ripe, sexy style to go with wild strawberry and blueberry fruits, some smoked earth and underbrush notes, medium body, a rounded texture, and rock-solid balance. It's a beautiful wine.

Lurid ruby. Vibrant and focused on the nose displaying intense red berry preserve Asian spice and floral scents and a touch of smoky minerality. Juicy and sharply focused on the palate offering lively raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that deepen and unfurl steadily with aeration. Fine-grained tannins add framework and closing grip to the finish which echoes the red fruit and mineral notes.

Coming from two sites and fermented with 20% stems and aged 15 months in 30% new oak, it offers a deeper ruby color as well as a classic bouquet of red currants, black cherries, scorched earth, spice, and forest floor. Elegant, medium-bodied, and layered, it's a gem.

This is an especially dark, meaty style, but it all works very nicely. I would give the 2016 a few more months in bottle as there is quite a bit of tannin that needs time to soften. The Barbieri speaks with tons of character.

The 2016 Pinot Noir Hawks View Vineyard is light to medium ruby in color with a tinge of purple, beautifully scented of fresh red cherries and redcurrants with intriguing layers of blood orange and red flowers, touches of crushed rock and spice. The palate is light to medium-bodied, offering cola, wood smoke and floral notes with very fine tannins and refreshing acidity, finishing long and very lovely.

From a steep vineyard near the eastern edge of the appellation, this effort by Santa Rosa-based Adam Lee offers composting rose petals, bright red cherry and a hint of game on the nose. There's a gamy kick to the palate as well, giving depth to the cherry and dried ginger flavors.

Vivid ruby-red. An expansive exotically perfumed bouquet evokes ripe dark berries potpourri smoky minerals and Moroccan and Asian spices. Sappy and focused on the palate offering juicy blackberry and cherry liqueur five-spice powder and cola flavors and a hint of candied rose. Fleshy and energetic in style showing youthfully chewy texture strong closing thrust and slow-mounting tannins on the clinging finish.

Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Intriguing aromas of dark berry mash, oak spice and rose petal. Sleek and sexy in the mouth in a mid weight plus style with waves of purple and blackberry fruits underlain with vibrant acidity. The whole package is harmonious with an uplifting finish.

Sultry and elegantly integrated aromas of purple flower and black raspberry decorate the nose of this single-vineyard expression by veteran Adam Lee. Pungent fruit shows on the palate, where baked black cherry and boysenberry are lifted by wild thyme and chaparral spice.

Santa Cruz Mountains and the Santa Lucia Highlands From a site right next to Garys' that was planted in 2008, the 2016 Pinot Noir Soberanes Vineyard was completely destemmed and spent 11 months (slightly less time in barrel) in 40% new French oak. It's a rich, voluptuous effort that has loads of mulberries, cranberries, spicy herbs, and underbrush aromas and flavors. Deep, medium to full-bodied and just loaded with fruit, it's a pleasure-bent effort that also has balance and class.

Bright-rimmed ruby. Powerful blackberry, cherry and spicecake flavors show very good clarity and pick up suggestions of licorice, cola and mocha as the wine opens up. In a plush, expansive style, showing impressive depth to the sappy, smoke-accented red and dark berry flavors. A spine of juicy acidity lends support to the wine's ripe fruit and drives a very long, sweet finish framed by smooth, harmonious tannins.

Rosella’s Vineyard is long and narrow and runs up the hill from east to west, giving variety of character from block to block. Siduri seems to have chosen from cooler blocks here. Cherry and rhubarb aromas are forward initially, with fall spice and some stemmy character adding interest. It’s well integrated from start to finish already, and there’s great push of flavor after the liquid is gone. A classy, feminine yet strong presentation. Girl power!

Fleshy and seamless on the palate, offering mineral-tinged raspberry and blueberry flavors that put on weight with air. 2016 PINOT NOIR, PARSONS VINEYARD The nose is espresso, chocolate husk and blackberry tart. The palate is a juicy plum, cherry and cranberry with a full-bodied core of plum and blue fruit in a mouth-coating finish.

2016 PINOT NOIR, VAN DER KAMP VINEYARD The nose is cherry, licorice, violet, soy and lavender. The palate entry shows firm acidity, violet pastille, blue plum and silky texture finishing with some green herbs and wild grape.
